DBU RISING

As Boise State prepares for its long-awaited debut in the revamped PAC-12 Conference in 2026, one thing is certain—the Broncos must return to their roots of defensive dominance to thrive at the Power Five level. The reputation as “DBU” wasn’t earned lightly; it came from producing physical, instinctive, and technically gifted defensive backs who could erase opposing receivers and make quarterbacks think twice. In Jayden Flournoy, a 2026 athlete out of Burleson, Texas, the Broncos have found a player who embodies the next wave of that defensive tradition—and who could help Boise State reclaim its throne in the secondary.

Discovered Potential
Flournoy’s football journey didn’t begin under the Friday night lights or even as a pop warner prodigy. In fact, he didn’t start playing organized football until 8th grade—and as a B-team starter. But a moment of belief changed everything.

“Coach Jon Kitna, the Burleson High School head coach at the time, came to one of our practices and told me face to face that I was going to be a D1 player one day,” Flournoy said. “That stuck with me from 8th grade until now—and it still sticks with me.”

That motivation from former NFL quarterback Jon Kitna has powered Flournoy through an impressive high school career so far as a tall, twitchy defensive back who could move in and out of breaks with rare agility. As a junior, he recorded 39 tackles, 5 interceptions, and 8 pass breakups—often shadowing top receivers in man-to-man coverage. His favorite performance? A fearless game against Argyle, a perennial Texas playoff team, where he made plays all over the field.

Elite Skillset
“I prefer to play cornerback,” he said. “It’s fun being on the island—rerouting your opponent, getting interceptions and returning them for six. Best of all, I love being able to hit someone.”

At 6 feet tall with a sub-4.5 forty and a 10.9-second 100m dash time, Flournoy combines speed, size, and violence in coverage. But he doesn’t take his skillset for granted. He trains relentlessly on his own, with school staff, and under the guidance of top trainers Coach Jo and Coach Osundea in Fort Worth. That foundation has helped him blossom into a complete DB capable of playing anywhere in the secondary.

Recruitment and Boise State Commitment
When it came time to choose his future home, it was Boise State that stood out—both for its culture and the people.  “What made Boise State rise to the top was the coaches,” he said. “Even when they were busy, they still stayed in contact and checked in on me.”  And what was it like when he finally committed?  “Excitement –  I felt blessed to be in the position I’m in today.”

Looking to the Future
Now, Flournoy is laser-focused on the next chapter. His goals go beyond football. He wants to become a better man, learn how to grow in all aspects of life, and stay in peak physical shape to contribute early. He fits naturally into Boise State’s vision as a versatile DB who can play multiple spots. But don’t be surprised if he moonlights as a wide receiver too—he’s got the hands, speed, and instincts to flip the field from both sides of the ball.

Personal Vibe
Off the field, he’s a laid-back competitor.
His favorite video games? Call of Duty Warzone, NBA 2K, and NCAA Football.

His go-to food? Wings.

And the most played song in his playlist?
“Let It All Work Out.” Fitting for a player who’s trusted the process from the start.

BACK TO DBU
With his raw ability, work ethic, and quiet confidence, Jayden Flournoy is set to become a key figure in Boise State’s return to DBU dominance. As the Broncos transition into the new-look PAC-12, they’ll need elite defenders who can match up against the conference’s best receivers week in and week out. Flournoy brings the tools to be that lockdown guy—and the versatility to contribute on offense if called upon. His journey from 8th grade B-teamer to Division I blue-chip is still being written, but in Boise, it looks like he’s found the perfect place to finish the story.
